My Story
Great North Run 2023
This September, I will be running the Great North Run for Headway, an incredible brain injury charity supporting brain injury survivors and their families in all aspects of life after brain injury.
Why Headway?
Brain injury is a leading cause of disability worldwide. In the UK, every 90 seconds someone is admitted to hospital with a suspected brain injury. I have worked with brain injury survivors for 15 years as a Support Worker, Assistant Psychologist, and now as a researcher focussed on developing interventions for improving psychological wellbeing and quality of life in those with a brain injury, carers and their families. Headway provide a crucial and valuable lifeline for anyone directly affected by brain injury. You can read more about Headway and the excellent work they do here: https://www.headway.org.uk/
Why Running?
Running is hard for a big lad like me. Full disclosure, I have only ever run one half marathon in my life…and that was last years Great North Run. All in all, it went well. I managed to complete it in a respectable 2 hours and 5 minutes. However, the less said about passing out on the Metro on the way home the better. This time round, I’ve decided to up the stakes. A sub 2-hour half marathon is at this point in time, an elusive dream. That’s the goal.
September is a world away right now….In preparation for this year, I have decided to throw some additional runs into the mix to keep the legs guessing. I will be running the Edinburgh Half Marathon in May and a cheeky 6-miler in the Blaydon Races in June. I will aim to keep this page updated with training progress and race updates leading up to the big day on September 10th 2023.
