My Story

We're running this years Great North Run in memory of my incredible mam. My mam was diagnosed with cancer back in July 2018 and after each visit to the Freeman Hospital, whether it be for results, treatment or surgery, Maggies were always there to help my mam and dad navigate through the next steps.... with a cup of coffee and a biscuit round their kitchen table.

Sadly that journey ended in October last year when she peacefully passed away at home surrounded by her family, less than 2 months after the profile picture was taken at our wedding.

The Great North Run has a special place in my heart, and it only seems right to take part in the Great North Run to raise money for Maggies in memory of my mam. From long before I could walk, I headed over to watch the Great North Run from the end of the street with my mam. Taking my copper pennies over to throw in the buckets -  well before the time of online donations!

The Great North run has a bit of a history with the Lazenby's, with my dad running it every year for the first 10 years... and going on to steward every year after that! A favourite anecdote of my parents is the time my mam went to watch my dad run the Great North Run in the early months of them dating. My mam ended up getting badly sunburnt (yes in the north!) as she was so excitedly keeping an eye out for my dad running by she forgot to put on sun screen!

It's over 10 years since I last did the Great North Run, and Steve keeps forgetting it's a half marathon and not a 5k! We best get training....

Wish us luck and please support us in this incredible challenge by donating what you can to support people with cancer.
