My Story

Great North Run 2023

This is my second year running the Great North Run for the Newcastle Hospitals Charity.

My story started in mid August 2021, where I was faced with daily headaches which I had put down to a possible broken filling. I then found myself struggling to remember words, finish sentences and remember what I was meant to be doing. One day it got significantly worse and I realised I needed help, but I was alone in the house and I had by this point forgotten how to use my phone. Eventually I got through to 111 and was taken to NSEC in Cramlington. They quickly put me on steroids to stop my problem getting worse, and after a few days of CT scans, MRI's and many other tests, I was blue lighted to the RVI to have brain surgery the next morning.

After my surgery I spent the rest of my time in Ward 16 in the RVI. The staff on the ward were amazing, and would bend over backwards for me and the other patients in my room. So many people were part of my care, from the surgeon and the other theatre staff (who I didn't meet) the nurses who carefully woke me up through the night to do my obs and meds, the wonderful staff who gave me my morning cuppa and cereal, the kitchen staff who made my meals, the ID team, paramedics, the neuro team, the MaxFax team, dental hospital staff, the cleaners, radiographers, porters, occupational therapy, ambulatory care, and the wonderful nurse from OPHAT who worked closely with me over a few days to make sure I was confident to administer my own IV medication at home. This meant I could leave hospital a lot earlier to be able to spend time with my family.

I owe my life to the staff at NSEC and the RVI, the least I can do is try to raise some money for them.

Anything you could donate to this wonderful cause would be amazing. The NHS is worth its weight in gold, and I feel so lucky that we have one of the best hospitals for neurosurgery on our doorstep.
